typocircle

The Typographic Circle was formed in 1976 to bring together anyone with an interest in type and typography.
We are a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers. We stage a variety of type and typography related events including a series of diverse monthly lectures by well-known industry speakers, and the annual New York Type Directors Club exhibition. Previous speakers have included Trevor Beattie, Stefan Sagmeister, Ken Garland, Jonathan Barnbrook, Fred Flade, MadeThought, NB Studio, Anthony Burrill, Rick Poyner, Sir John Hegarty... the list goes on.
Besides being serious about type, we’re a very sociable organisation with a reputation for staging enjoyable events. We try hard not to come across as being stuffy or elitist. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in type and typography, and there are no entry tests or examinations.

studio dumbar - music promotions + event promotions

An independent music ensemble founded in 1988, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta has an international reputation and a repertoire encompassing everything from baroque to contemporary music. Prompted by a desire to broaden their audience and refresh their public profile, the string orchestra appointed Studio Dumbar to renew their visual identity.
We created a distinctly modern identity driven by a bold logotype and typographic palette, the implementation of which remains consistent across all communications. Beyond these core elements the identity is free to evolve, with colour palettes and illustrations reflecting the ensemble’s diverse repertoire, as well as the rich and varied nuances of music in general. With each poster responding graphically to the performance’s musical themes, this award-winning series continues to produce remarkable imagery whilst retaining a signature style.

Kasper - florio - exhibition promotions

‘Heimspiel’ is a triennial regional art exhibition, presenting and promoting artists from eastern Switzerland, the Principality of Liechtenstein and Vorarlberg in three different institutions in St.Gallen.
The visual identity is based on the three venue spaces or white cubes, displaying the prospectively opening doors for all the winning artists.
At the same time it is opening the doors for visitors to discover and experience the creative potential of the region and offering a space for exchange and discourse.

Kasper-Florio - Exhibition poster

The flyer is announcing
an open night at the St.Gallen Museum of the Arts. The event’s program features a guided tour, a lecture and poetry performance and djs playing until late in the night. The graphics show the
sunset and darkening change from day to night, according to the name of the event ‘Nachtschicht’ (nightshift). While the sun is shifting position the background sub-
sequently becomes denser.
The typography on the backside is based on the same concept where the single text boxes shift within the grid
and each paragraph slightly becomes darker.

Flyer announcing a party
with house music and liquor. The lines are hand printed.
In collaboration with Andrea Rüeger.

Not really the look or style we would choose for our night, however it shows how different you can be with designs, as apposed to your number club night flyer.

drawswords - exhibition

This graphic identity for the 2009 Open Day of The Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, was based on the ongoing need for human hands to sculpt digital 'clay'. In visual communication and art education there is a tendency to use the computer more and more. That isn't necessarily a bad thing but we wanted to focus on the indispensability of the human creative mind in art and design processes.
First we designed the main typography on the computer, then we printed those designs and digitized them again by scanning the printed sheets. But while scanning we moulded the sheet, which resulted in all kinds of handmade distorted typography.
In other words: even in digital design processes (or designing with digital tools), the human hand remains the most important design 'tool'.

FACE TOMORROW

Artwork and logo for Dutch indie rock band Face Tomorrow's awesome new album (CD and LP) on Redfield Records. Besides the CD and LP we designed a gazillion other things like posters, stickers, maxicard, t-shirts, buttons, a giant back drop, a single cover, banners, wallpapers for both desktop and smartphone, flyers and much more.

The 'blind spots' on the CD and LP were overprinted using a UV Spot varnish and the LP version was limited to 400 copies on black vinyl and only a 100 copies on marbled red/white vinyl all including the CD version as well.
