I started by creating this grid for all letterforms to be created on, to make sure each letter was the correct height in relationship to the previous one, allowing it to be as functional.

I then messed around trying to incorporate the ears into the letter 'a' before realising that i was just over complicating the typeface and it would work a lot smoother if they were only used where applicable.
